The UKFM Varieties Working Group (VWG) met on 16 March to agree the ratings for wheat varieties progressing through the first stage of the process to join the Recommended List (RL). There was a record number of candidates to get through, with VWG members testing 50 varieties of breadmaking and biscuit. It has been a number of years since a Group 1 winter wheat has joined the RL, but the latest round of assessments found some promising quality with some Group 1 ratings being given out. These varieties need to show consistent quality over the next two years of assessments to eventually join the RL with this rating, fingers crossed!
