As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2025, it's the perfect opportunity to spotlight how apprenticeships in the flour milling industry are more than just an entry point; they are pathways to long-term success and growth.

At 18 years old, Ben Windrow embarked on his journey into flour milling though an apprenticeship that started in logistics at ADM Milling UK. He dove into the day-to-day workings of the flour milling process, gaining hands-on experience and learning from colleagues who were passionate about the industry. But what made his apprenticeship truly transformative was the opportunity to explore various roles within the company.

Reflecting on his experience, Ben said, “My apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to understand different areas of the business, and from that, I built relationships that helped me grow. It’s about understanding how people like to operate.”

What started as a logistics apprenticeship turned into a flourishing career, and now he is Regional Sales Manager and looking forward to a future ideally in leadership. Ben’s journey highlights the diverse opportunities available in the flour milling industry. From technical support and production to marketing and sales, apprenticeships open doors to a variety of roles. These doors don’t just lead to jobs, they lead to fulfilling careers in an essential, ever-evolving industry. And as Ben put it, “Apprenticeships give you the chance to grow and shape your future in ways you can’t imagine.”

Flour milling is an exciting field with a plethora of career paths waiting to be discovered. Apprenticeships in the industry offer real-world experience, skill development, and a route to leadership roles with hard work and dedication. Whether someone is interested in working on the production floor, managing key accounts, or innovating in the field of food science, flour milling has a career path available.

National Apprenticeship Week serves as a reminder that apprenticeships aren’t just for entry-level jobs but are the foundation for building a long and rewarding career.
